Cochrane is a town in the province of Alberta, Canada. The town is located 18 kilometres west of the Calgary city limits along Highway 1A. With a 2009 population of around 15,400, the town of Cochrane is the second biggest town within Alberta and one of the fastest growing communities in the country. It is part of Calgary's Census Metropolitan Area and a member community of the Calgary Regional Partnership or also known as CRP. The town is bordered by Rocky View County.

The name "Cochrane" is derived from Senator Matthew Henry Cochrane, who in 1881 established the Cochrane Ranche. The Canadian Pacific Railway granted the town site in 1885 and named it to honour Senator Cochrane, but some people made the town of Cochrane their home in spite of the surrounding ranching population.

In 1903, the hamlet of Cochrane officially became a village. The 1906 population of the village was just 158 inhabitants. Five years afterward the village boasted a population of 395 residents.

Situated within the Bow River Valley, Cochrane is situated at the base of Big Hill, at an elevation of 3,891 ft. or 1,186 metres. Intersecting the town of Cochrane are highways 22 and 1A. The reputation of the town of Cochrane is more about its western culture, that is fairly noticeable when roaming through the local roads. The town is a popular location for coffee and ice cream in its pretty western-oriented stores along with for golfing, hiking, windsports in addition to other adventure activities.

Cochrane is also a small industrial centre. Major businesses include construction, lumber, retail, and ranching. It is notable as being one of a really few communities within the nation with no business tax.

The community within Cochrane is affluent and educated with approximately 16,000 customers, making it a perfect location for businesses to locate here. The trading area in 50 square kms exceeds 1 million customers. Cochrane's industrial, residential and commercial property prices are amongst the cheapest within the Calgary region.

The diverse business community already includes industry leading technology firms, national retail franchises, natural resource processors and manufacturers, a lot of business services providers and various successful independent service and product companies capitalizing on the regional and local marketplace.

Now, the town of Cochrane is still well-known for its western heritage, unique buildings and popular "Main Street", in addition to its small town hospitality. With the completion of the downtown revitalization and celebration of the Town's centennial during the year 2003, the town of Cochrane has become a famous tourist attraction for many.

The town of Cochrane values its small-town environment, escarpments, distinctive big hills, unique opportunities and waterways.
