The city is the county seat of Richland County, even if a portion of the city of Columbia does extend into neighboring County of Lexington. The city of Columbia is a part of the biggest metropolitan statistical area in the state with 767,598 inhabitants. The name Columbia was derived from Christopher Columbus as a poetic term for the Americas.

The city of Columbia is situated 13 miles or 21 km northwest of South Carolina's geographic center. It is the main city of the Midlands region in South Carolina. This area consists of several counties within the central part of the state. The city of Columbia is located at the convergence of two rivers, the Saluda River and the Broad River which merges at the city of Columbia and forms the Congaree River.

The South Carolina General Assembly created the city of Columbia during 1786. The city's location was very important to the overall development of the entire state. Like for instance, the Congarees was a front line fort situated on the west bank of the Congaree River and was the head of navigation in the Santee River system. In 1754, the colonial government established a ferry to connect the fort with the growing settlements situated on the east bank's higher grounds.

The city of Columbia is along the Appalachian Mountain fall line, similar to many of colonial America's earliest settlements. The fall line is the location where the many of the rivers become harder to navigate when sailing upriver. It is likewise the spot farthest downstream where often falling water could be utilized to power a mill.

The city of Columbia enjoys a diversified economy. Amongst the major employers include Blue Cross Blue Shield of SC, state government, the Palmetto Health Hospital system and the University of South Carolina. Furthermore, the U.S. Army's 2nd largest training facility, Fort Jackson, is also situated within Columbia.
