Canton is a city within Stark County in northeastern Ohio, United States. It is situated 97 kilometers south of Cleveland. The city of Canton was founded during the year 1805 on the West and Middle Branches of the Nimishillen Creek. During the 19th Century, its economy was based on heavy manufacturing due to its numerous railroad lines. When manufacturing declined, Canton developed a more diversified economy based on service industries such as education, retailing, healthcare and finance. Canton serves as the county seat of Stark County. Based on the 2009 US Census, the Canton-Massillon Metropolitan Statistical Area has a total population of 408,005. The city's population is declining and sits at 73,007 residents. Then again, its population decline has been slower than other cities in the state of Ohio, such as Youngstown in nearby county of Mahoning, that has gone through a bigger decline. The most recent census results really moved Canton up from 9th to 8th largest city in the state of Ohio. A lot of people come to the Canton area to go to the William McKinley Presidential Library and Museum, Pro Football Hall of Fame, First Ladies National Historic Site and McKinley National Memorial. In the year 1769 Bezaleel Wells surveyed the land that is now Canton. He bought and subdivided the land and sold the lots in the year 1805. Canton became a famous region for industry and agriculture throughout the Civil War, particularly steel production which thrived after the war ended. In the 1880's the city of Canton had a manufacturing boom. Businesses which produced machinery sold agricultural machines internationally. Watch making companies situated in Canton during the 1880's. Iron and steel companies were primary industries in the 20th century. A key employer until it was shut down during the year 2007 was Hoover Vacuum Cleaner Company, a major Canton business since the early 1900's. The end of World War II saw the end of heavy manufacturing and a decline of its significance within the city's economy. The most essential economic sectors in Canton includes education, finance and healthcare, while the sectors of poultry production and dairy farming also contribute considerably to the economy. The area includes food production companies like for example Shearers, Nickles Bakery and Park Farms. Two major employers are Diebold, that makes electronic bank vaults, voting devices and ATMs, and Belden Brick Company, that produces brick and masonry. The residents of Canton are working in the sectors of educational services, healthcare, construction, metal and metal products, food services and accommodation, finance and insurance and manufacturing. 23% of the workforce works in office and sales occupations, whereas service jobs totaled 19 percent of the labor force.
