Wilmington (population 106,000) is a city in the state of North Carolina. Wilmington City serves as the county seat of New Hanover County. It the 8th biggest city by population within the state. The larger Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area, wherein the city of Wilmington is a part, has a population of 362,315 (2010 census).

Wilmington City is a port city, situated between the Atlantic Ocean and Cape fear River. Wilmington was named by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as amongst the Dozen Distinctive Destinations, in 2008. The historic downtown of the city features a mile-long Riverwalk, that is a popular location for visitors. Close to a variety of beaches, Wilmington City has three beach communities within a 20-30 minute drive from downtown: Wrightsville, Carolina and Kure beach.

In the 1720's, English settlers moved into the area. Wilmington City was then incorporated during 1739, and was named in honor of the Earl of Wilmington, who was a British Primer Minister under King George II. Lumber production and naval supply formed the economic base of the city during the 18th and 19th Centuries. The port was a major base for Confederate blockade runners in the Civil War.

On the records of Wilmington history, there was a notorious assault on an African-American area by a group of Caucasians, who had been insulted by an editorial appearing in a local African-American newspaper. The mob destroyed the printing press, set fire to the newspaper building, forced hundreds more to leave town and lynched black residents. The incident is known as the "Massacre of 1898." The leader of the white group accountable for the massacre later became the mayor.

There is a solid industrial sector in Wilmington City. The city of Wilmington is also part of North Carolina's research coast, which is amongst the largest research centers within the U.S. The manufacturers within the city of Wilmington provide clothing, electrical, medical, electronic and telecommunications equipment, paper products and food products. Amongst the largest television and movie production facilities outside of California is situated within Wilmington City - EUE Screen Gems Studios.
