Jacksonville, North Carolina is situated within the county of Onslow. It is considered a part and serves as the county seat of the Jacksonville-North Carolina Metropolitan Area. The average age of Jacksonville inhabitants is 22.8, the youngest amongst any U.S. city. This is because of the presence of the Marine Corps Air Station New River and United States Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

The land area of Jacksonville is approximately 44.5 square miles. The city of Wilmington is roughly 40 minutes away and the Intra Coastal Waterway is 15 minutes away.

During the year 1757 the community was inhabited and in 1842 was officially incorporated as a town. Jacksonville derived its name from the seventh President of the US, Andrew Jackson. The city boomed in the year 1941 with the establishment of Marine Barracks, New River, that is currently called Camp Lejeune.

The most popular attractions within Jacksonville comprise the Lynwood Park Zoo and Marine Corporation Museum of the Carolinas. Activities such as swimming, boating, fishing, camping and picnicking can be enjoyed at the Hammocks Beach State Park. Golfing is available at the Rock Creek Golf and Country Club. Annual events include the Kuumba Festival, Onslow County Fair and Fall Family Fun Day.

The economy of the city is heavily dependent on the military. Thousands of residents are employed by the Marine Corps Air Station New River and Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. Besides the military, significant sectors are education, government, accommodation, healthcare, construction and food services. About 28 percent of the labor force are employed in management, professional and related positions. Sales and office provides 27% of jobs and the government provides 26 percent.
