Therefore, it has all of the amenities and services which would be expected in a much larger, urban centre.

The first individuals to inhabit the district around Thompson include the Paleo-Indian hunters who moved through the region more than 8000 years ago. It wasn't until 1896, that Europeans came to the area to conduct geological surveys.

The history of modern Thompson began in 1956, when large amounts of ore discovered by utilizing an airborne electromagnetometer. This spawned ten years of mining exploration within the area. The village was founded during 1957 after an agreement with the Government of Manitoba and Inco Limited. Thompson is planned community and is named after Inco's chairman, John F. Thompson. The population has been estimated as high as 26,000 inhabitants prior to the recession during the 1970s.

Its leading local industry is the mining, milling, smelting and refining of nickel, with more nickel concentrates coming from Voisey's Bay, Labrador.

Apart from Vale Inco Ltd; Calm Air, Manitoba Hydro, MTS and the provincial government employ most of the people in the city of Thompson. A huge part are teachers and entrepreneurs as well.

The city of Thompson features two campuses for the the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Social Work and University College of the North.

For the entire Northern Manitoba district, Thompson is the main retail service centre. The city maintains three shopping centres, comprising the Thompson Plaza, the City Centre Mall and the Westwood Mall. During the 1980s, all three malls were completely rented and attracted popular chains nevertheless, more recently they have had difficulty fully leaseing all the spaces.
