The small town of Olds is located in Central Alberta. The town sits just north of Calgary and 61 km south of Red Deer. Sundre and Didsbury are the towns closest neighbours. The town of Olds was established during the year 1890, when its very first settlers began coming in the area. The number of travelers on trail was increasing, and there were many of people who were in need of places to lodge in for an overnight stay. As soon as the rail line reached Olds, a foreman named David Shannon arrived on an open handcar. Shannon was a native of Ireland, and he provided living accommodations for his family and people who needed to squat for some time. The town site was named for a CPR traffic manager, named George Olds, who came from England and worked as a General Traffic manager for the Canadian Pacific. The period around the turn of the century was successful for Olds, since numerous homesteaders stayed within the region, which greatly hastened the growth of the economy.

In the early days, Olds was known as "Hay City" because of its abundant hay crops which were harvested every year. The city has paid tribute to this by naming their trail the "Hay City Trails." Other parks in the town consist of: New Line Skatepark and Centennial Park. Centennial Park is a great place to have weddings, business gatherings, or other events. It is also a great venue for family picnics, and the Gazebo and Cookhouse are available for private functions. Individuals who would love to let their kids roam the playgrounds could go to Beech Cres, Hartman Green, Ralph Maybank Memorial, Neil Leatherdale Park, Herb Samis Park, and Frank Wong Memorial. Outdoor Skating Rinks are likewise available at Centennial Park and Neil Leatherdale Park.

Golf-fans who would like a challenge can go to Olds Central Highlands Golf Course. The course is located four kilometers east of Olds, and amongst its amenities consist of an 18-hole golf course, a driving range, a licensed dining room together with lounge and sundeck, and a pro-shop together with power or pull cart and equipment rental. Individuals who are interested in Baseball can go to Imperial Drive and its 2 diamonds, O.R. Hedges Park with 5 ball diamonds, Olds College with 1 diamond, and Deer Meadow School with 2 diamonds. The Olds Municipal Library is an information resource for each and every community member. It also loans print and non-print materials for cultural, educational and recreational purposes. Access to Internet is also without charge, and the library offers numerous programs for adults and youths, story programs for pre-schools, and summer reading programs. Olds Evergreen Hall is meant for senior citizens, and they meet up for activities like day bus trips, exercises, shuffleboard, walking, pool, carpet bowling, card games, square dancing and bingo.
