1. You usually need a bachelor's degree or college diploma in a related field such as psychology, social services or education.
2. However, completion of high school, plus several years' experience in counselling-related services or in a helping profession, may substitute for formal training.
3. With experience, you may move up the ranks to become a supervisor or to a position in personnel or training.
4. Most recent entrants have a community college diploma and almost 3 in 10 have an undergraduate university degree.
